The EasyDens digital hydrometer and Brew Meister mobile app for iOS and Android make measuring the gravity of your wort and tracking fermentation simple and extremely accurate. Just use the included syringe to inject a small 2ml sample into the unit, activate and wait two seconds for a precise specific gravity reading.
Features Specific Gravity, Plato, Estimated ABV (based on measuring both original gravity and final gravity), Density, and Temperature readings in both F° and C°.
Downloadable apps are available for Beer, Wine, and Spirits, although premium features require a subscription.
In addition, this package includes the Anton Paar SmartRef, so you can determine the precise alcohol content of fermenting or finished beer by using the measuring technologies of both units in combination. This is the most affordable way to check the exact alcohol content of a beverage, and is invaluable when doing things like making low alcohol beer.
What is the difference between EasyDens and SmartRef in brewing?
EasyDens is a digital density meter that measures specific gravity and temperature according to the oscillating U-tube principle to determine parameters such as specific gravity (SG) and °Plato directly. EasyDens provides highly accurate specific gravity measurement results throughout the whole brewing process, ideal for passionate home and craft brewers who are looking for a precise measuring device to optimize the brewing process and exploit the full potential of their beer. Think of it as a really precise digital hydrometer, that, when paired with the SmartRef digital refractometer, can also measure the alcohol content of beer, wine or spirits without knowing starting and final gravities. Keep in mind you do not need to buy the SmartRef for alcohol content determination if you record your starting and final gravities with the EasyDens.
SmartRef is a digital refractometer that measures the refractive index and temperature of liquids and determines measurement parameters such as °Brix. However, °Brix refers to sucrose-water mixtures. Since wort is not just a mixture of sucrose and water, adjustments such as wort and alcohol correction must be applied to correctly determine specific gravity and °Plato, and follow the fermentation process. The Brew Meister mobile app already performs these calculations automatically. The correction factors can be specified globally or individually for each batch to ensure accurate results regardless of the beer type. Due to its simple and quick operation, the SmartRef is suitable for measurements during the entire brewing process, especially for beginners.
The combination of EasyDens & SmartRef enables direct ABV determination of finished beer, wine, kombucha, and spirits with an accuracy of 0.6% v/v without knowing starting or final gravities. Click here for an article on alcohol determination with both the EasyDens and SmartRef.

High Tech Brewing
These instruments in combination are an incredible tool to measure and track standard gravity and alcohol content of your brews. They are also capable of measuring OG, FG, and ABV of finished beers, which can be quite helpful for both the absent minded hydrometer owner and anyone interested in the vital statistics of existing commercial beers or homebrews. I measured previously brewed beers of my own and the numbers from these units matched my noted results based on hydrometer readings rather closely. One caveat: the slip luer ports on the EasyDens are too close to each other to use standard syringes larger than 1ml. I am having a difficult time sourcing "offset tip" syringes and find it onerous to purchase a single "replacement" for a price far higher than they would cost in a box of 100.
