Q: Can you use the brew bag in the mash and boil for finer milled grains

A: A mesh bag inside the Mash & Boil can cause problems if it rests on the bottom for more than a few seconds. If it does this, it will block the thermostat probe and trigger an ER4 error code and shut off the unit. You will need to reset the unit by pressing the button on the very bottom to clear this, which can be awkward. So, we would not recommend this, unless the bag was suspended so it could never touch the bottom.

Q: Re: using a separate burner/heater for sparge water, I heat 6.75 gal. in the M&B to 172 deg, transfer 3.5 gallons to a 5gal cooler/HLT and then add cold water to the remaining water to drop to mash temp. The water in the cooler stays hot enough to sparge

A: Glad to hear someone does not need another heating vessel to heat their sparge water!

Q: Just to make sure I understand the process, does the sparge water need to be heating separately (on a second burner and pot)?

A: Yes, the sparge water is heated separately.
